The years 1943-44 were years of unbroken retreat for Hitler’s Germany. Signal: Years of Retreat 1943-44 concludes the coverage of Hitler’s Wartime Picture Magazine which has been preceded by the first compilation of the outstanding German illustrated magazine as well as its equally popular sequel, Signal: Years of Triumph 1940-42. Signal continued to be published in English until the editorial offices in Paris for the French and English editions were abruptly closed when France was liberated in July 1944. Although editions in other languages such as Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and German continued to appear until virtually the end of the war, the magazine’s years of retreat paralleled the fate of its masters.
In this third collection the rare and largely hitherto unpublished photographs are accompanied by a decreasingly strident text. The editors realized that with few if any victories to report, exaggeration of what little good news for Germany appeared combined with outright untruths about ’advances’ in a collapsing North African or Italian Front were mixed liberally with features on prosperity in the Reich even as the bombs of the Allies fell. Anti-British and anti-American tones became more apparent as Goebbels hoped to convince the inhabitants of occupied Europe that the Anglo-American liberation of Western Europe would be more cruel and barbarous than life under the swastika. Signal’s dwindling sales from late 1943 onwards indicated that the readership was not convinced.
When the first facsimile edition of Signal appeared in English in 1976, the book achieved a degree of popular acceptance which surprised and pleased both its editor and publishers.
Although it was a propaganda journal, supervised by Goebbel’s Propaganda Company, it was perhaps for that very reason that readers throughout the English-speaking world sought to catch a glimpse through the hitherto closed window of the Third Reich in order to see Hitlerian Europe the way the Nazis wanted it to be seen. It is for that reason that a second compilation of material from Signal was presented to the public and that this latest sequel appears.
Signal: Years of Retreat is the living record of the decline and fall of the Third Reich.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0601/9858/4472/files/Signal.YearsofRetreat_1943-44-Hitler_sWartimePictureMagazine_1.webp?v=1790937083
https://libreriabiellese.com/products/signal-years-of-retreat-1943-44-hitler-s-wartime-picture-magazine
