Attracting millions of visitors from around the world each year, the Grand Canyon is one of nature’s greatest scenic wonders. Two billion years of geological evidence of the earth’s history is exposed in the Canyon’s rock walls. Traveling the Canyon’s length requires a river journey of 277 miles, through canyons varying in distance from less than a half mile to more than eighteen miles apart, and through depths reaching nearly 6,000 feet.
A journey from the Canyon’s South Rim to the North Rim by automobile requires a trip of around 215 miles, or a hike of 21 miles up and down steep trails. This hike takes the visitor through four of our country’s seven life zones (regions sharing the same type of climate, plant, and animal life), and features the flora and fauna equivalent of a trip from the Mexican desert to the Canadian woods.
At the Canyon’s floor, the Colorado River endlessly carves and shapes the Canyon deeper and deeper into the buried rock of the earth’s geological past.
