Preface:
In the 1960s a curious thing happened: America redis- covered Indians. This is not to imply that the tribes were ever on the brink of vanishing into history. On the contrary, the Indian population had been steadily on the rise since the turn of the century. For decades Native American leaders had called for less control over their lives by the government. National attention was focused on the Indian Rights movement when radical elements occupied Alcatraz, created an incident at Wounded Knee, and took over the Bureau of Indian Affairs offices in Washington, D. C. Ultimately, President Nixon enunciated a federal policy of economic and political self-determination for Indian tribes.
Simultaneously, there was a renewal of interest in Indian culture throughout the country. Indian arts, clothing, music, and folklore were «in». Unfortunately, most textbooks and other sources still portrayed Indians as tribal-traditional people living in much the same way as their ancestors had done. This produced a distorted image of what it was really like to be an Indian - particularly an Indian child growing up in twentieth-century America.
In 1974 the Florida League of Women Voters commissioned a work which would present a realistic picture of the life of Seminole youngsters in Florida. The goal was to promote greater cross-cultural understanding and appreciation of Indian life by non-Indians. At the same time the book was to enhance the self-image of Seminole children by focusing on their way of living and viewing the world; they were to be presented as unique people to be accepted as individuals, rather than as cultural curiosities.
The Seminole World of Tommy Tiger was completed in 1974, but due to unforeseen circumstances, its publication was delayed. This fictionalized account of one Seminole family is based on a composite of real people and actual events on the reservations in the early 1970s - a period when the Seminoles were rapidly assimilating into the social and economic life of south Florida, but prior to the time when the intrusions of business enterprises and government programs would exceedingly complicate their existence.
Today, much has changed on the reservations, especially the addition of new housing, improved health and recreation facilities, and greater contact with non-Indians. Nevertheless, Seminole children remain the active, inqui sitive, and friendly individuals we hoped to portray in Tommy Tiger and his friends.
