From the time of their introduction in 1918 on the first anniversary of the Russian Revolution Soviet era Red Square military parades were the default annual demonstration of Soviet military technology and projected military might.
The tradition of regular military parades on Red Square began with the first post Revolutionary parade held on 1 May 1918, at a time when the Russian civil war had just begun, and the survival of the fledgling Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) was by no means certain. The new state did survive, and would grow in strength and expand as the USSR, which would last until 1991.
Soviet military parades were held in most years from 1918 until 1941. The most poignant Red Square parade was held in the early dawn of 7th November 1941, when Wehrmacht forces were on the outskirts of Moscow and the future looked bleak for the Soviet Union. Wartime military parades on Red Square would resume four years later, on 1st May 1945, the same day Germany presented its initial conditional surrender terms to the Red Army in Berlin. Somewhat ironically, the terms were presented by the very German officer who had been the German military attaché in Moscow in the late 1930s and had reported to Hitler on the Red Army’s unpreparedness for war with Germany. A massive Victory in Europe (VE Day) parade was held on Red Square on 24th June 1945, followed three months later by the less well known Victory against Japan (VJ Day) parades held in September 1945.
In the post-war years, the Red Square military parades continued their pre-war tradition as the default annual demonstration of Soviet military might for consumption by domestic and foreign audiences. The modern Russian Federation did not in 2017 formally celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the 1917 Russian Revolution. The tradition of military parades has continued however in the form of the annual 9th May Victory parades held on Red Square, which as in the past continue to provide an annual public glimpse of the Russian military machine.
This second volume of a three volume series describes the military parades held on Red Square from the first post-war Soviet Army parade in May 1946 until the last Soviet era Red Square parade held in November 1990.
