On 14 December 1986 Jeana Yeager and Dick Rutan took off from Edwards Air Force Base. in California’s Mojave Desert, at the beginning of an adventure that would capture the imagination of the world. Their goal was the last great achievement in the annals of flying history - to be the first to circle the globe non-stop without refuelling. To perform this feat they had built, with the help of a team of volunteers, an extraordinary airplane called Voyager.
This book is the story of that adventure. They describe their fateful meeting at an airshow in California that led to the ’wild idea’ of an aeronautic exploit no one believed possible. We follow them through the years of gruelling effort, alternating setbacks and successes, through the struggle to raise funds and keep the project alive without any government support, through the designing, building and testing of Voyager, to the completion of their pioneering flight.
The flight itself required almost superhuman effort - the two pilots spending nine days in a tiny unpressurized cockpit. The plane weighed less than a car and was filled to the wingtips with 1,200 gallons of fuel. Their flight path took them through some of the worst weather conditions in the world.
